Look What the Elf Did

The elf on the shelf is a Christmas tradition that has been around since 2005. The tradition started with a children’s book written by author Carol Aebersold with the assistance of Chandra Bell, her daughter. The book explains that Santa sends elves to children’s houses who spy on the kids and then report back to Santa who has been naughty and nice.

Parents all over the world use the elf on the shelf to keep their kids straight during the month of December. They pose the elf in new positions every night of the month, so their child can wake up each morning and search for the elf. This grandma got in on the fun with her creative idea using an elf to explain where peppermints come from.

Fur Makes a Good Nest Insulator

With spring just starting and leaves turning green, the birds start making their appearance too. The increase of birds chirping in the air also signals that nest building is on the horizon. The problem with some locations, particularly in city environments, is that nest building materials are often hard for birds to find. While small sticks may provide the basic structure, there is much more that goes in to making a nest.

grandparents3

This grandma got creative with her cat’s shed hair by clipping it in to a tree for the birds to use as nesting material. Experts say the idea is actually a good idea because birds need softer materials to provide the finishing touches to their nest and pet hair can be a good insulator for eggs. They say the next time you brush your cat or dog, put it out for the birds to use instead of throwing it away. Sounds like granny was on to something here.
